Mood board of shots

We have compiled images that we think would fit the theme of our music video.  A main theme which is prevalent in this mood-board is the use of coloured lights which we aim to use in the bathroom scene. Another is the use of "trippy" effects to make the video correlate with the 70s based song.

Carol Vernallis' theory

Overview

Has 4 key aspects that all relate around how a music video is produced::

-Narrative

-Editing
-Camera movement/ framing
-Diegesis

Narrative

- A visual response to the narrative, as anything that is happening visually reflects the lyrics of the song.
The music may have a them or a narrative.

Editing

-The video may disrupt conventions of continuity editing, and could break other rules of editing, for example the 360° rule and jump cutting.

Camera - movement/ framing

- Another key concept is tha music videos have an
have an establishing shot which is a key feature to the video. Videos also include a range of medium and close-up shots which help to establish the artist. This style of camera work is somewhat distinctive to the video as it may move in time to the lyrics or beat of the song.

Diegisis
This is the setting of the music video, vernallis explains in her theory how the diegesis will be revealed quite slowly. The actions in the video are not always completed and may disrupted in someway. Repetition is considered key throughout the music video as some frames will appear more important than others due to the specific shooting of that setting.

Production Diary

GROUP: Phoebe Hall, Katie Dunning, Holly Connell, Jamie Hewlett

26/06/17 - First meeting in our Prelim groups. We had to decide what music video we wanted to create. We narrowed it down to:
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson

Love me like you - Little mix

Last Friday night - Katy Perry

Marvin Gaye - Charlie Puth

We liked these music videos because they all had a fun, upbeat sound and feeling to them. We liked the pop songs because the videos looked fun to film and they included different camera angles and settings.
We created a media group chat, where we further discussed what videos we wanted to recreate.

27/06/17 - Today we decided on the music video Call Me Maybe. In this lesson we watched the video frame by frame up until 1 minute and screenshot all the different angles and created a storyboard. We then created a list of props and costumes we needed and shooting schedule.

28/06/17 - Today we went to Phoebe's house and managed to film the first 30 seconds of the music video. We used Phoebe's conservatory and garden as the setting for the video. The filming was successful and we got some good shots and were able to get a lot of filming done. Obviously we don't have the exact same settings and props but we were able to recreate the shots well. If we were to do it again we would probably try and do it on a day with better weather.

29/06/17 - In today's lesson, we uploaded the footage shot yesterday onto the computer and begun to edit it on premier. To edit we needed to zoom the pictures out and colour correct it to make the video lighter and have a warm glow like the video. We found out that some of the shots we filmed didn't look like the shots we wanted and some files went corrupt so we need to refilm some shots. We also worked on the blog posts that we needed for the video.

30/06/17 In today's lesson, we continued the editing and blog posts. So far we are pleased with what we have created so far, even though we have to retake some shots and finish filming the rest of the video.

03/07/17 -  Today in lesson we carried on with editing and the blog posts. We also loaded the car with the drum kit. After school, we went to Holly's house and filmed the garage scene. For this scene we needed some extra people to help us film as we would all be a part of the band. We needed a drum player, 2 guitar players, a keyboard player and a singer. We had to clear out the garage and set the drums and band up. The filming went really well and we got all the shots we needed. We finished our filming today.

04/07/17 - Today we downloaded all of our footage and carried on with the editing and the updating of the blog posts.

No Rest - Dry the River

In this lesson we listen to the song No rest by Dry the Rivers. First we listened to just the song with our closed to allow us to try and imagine what kind of music video would fit well the song.  After we were given a copy of the lyrics.

After first listening to the song, my initial ideas included:
- To focus on the main singer and the band in the background.
- Should film the majority outside, as the lyrics to me sounds very       earthy.
- Having gloomy types of weather e.g. grey skys/ pouring with rain.
- No narrative only a perfomance video.

"No Rest"

I used to be a king alone
Like Solomon or Rehoboam
And in the eaves, the Corvidae
Did jealous keep my picture frames
And everything did oxidate in place.

But then you came, a single cell
With astrolabe and carousel
And algebra and symmetry
And none of this was lost on me
And I could see how still I’d been before

If I don’t eat, I don’t sleep at all
Like limbs in procession,
Like so many birds
Stampeding like oxen,
Our hearts are a herd

I loved you in the best
I loved you in the best way possible
I loved you in the best

Did you see the light in my heart?
Did you see the sweat on my brow?
Did you see the fear in my heart?
Did you see me bleeding out?

I loved you in the best
I loved you in the best way possible
I loved you in the best way possible
I loved you in the best way possible
I loved you in the best…

After picturising our ideas we were shown the music video.

3 song pitch

3 song pitch from Holly Connell

Feedback we received:

Consideration - Rihanna:
  • Does not have a chorus so may be hard to keep the audience interested or keep a particular theme.
  • Rihanna is black and everyone in our group is white so it would seem unrealistic to many people watching as the voice and appearance do not match.
  • Since the song is by Rihanna, it may be had for the audience to detach from the image of Rihanna that goes along with her recognisable voice.
  • This song could get boring since it is the same tempo all the way through and does not change much.
Burn it Down - Daughter:
  • Anyone in our group could play the main artist.
  • This song has an interesting beat as it varies and it consists of a main chorus so there is lots of room for creativity.
  • Could be both performance and narrative- based.
  • Could be filmed outdoors and be very symbolic.
  • Comparable to Kate Bush and Florence and the Machine for their quirky look.
Nostalgia - NAO
  • Has a very 70s vibe - comparable to bands like Jackson 5 but with a modern twist.
  • Very colourful song, has a lot of room to be visually interesting, creative and colourful.
  • Would include dancing
  • Very performance based with strange twists to make it more alternative.
  • Would have to have an iconic artist with lots of costume changes and alter egos.
  • Lava lamps, disco balls, studio lights etc.
